Demolition of the Metrodome is on track despite cold weather. Little above-ground structure remains; crews still have to demolish and remove underground stadium infrastructure, including tunnels and foundations.

According to Finance & Commerce, the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority said Wednesday that excavation for the new Minnesota Vikings stadium is nearly 50 percent complete, and demolition of the Metrodome is on track for completion in April.

As of this week, crews have trucked off 400,000 cubic yards of dirt from the site near the half-demolished Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis. In all, about 850,000 cubic yards of dirt will be removed.

Meanwhile, workers have installed about 15 percent of the 300 drilled piers needed for the new stadium, and have poured 3 percent of the estimated 100,000 cubic yards of concrete, according to the authority.

A third tower crane is expected to rise in April.

Michele Kelm-Helgen, chair of the authority, said the project is advancing “according to plan.”

The remains of the long-abandoned Fuji-Ya restaurant will be torn down and the slope beneath it peeled away to make way for a new park featuring unearthed ruins beneath them as part of the latest Mississippi River redevelopment plan.

According to Minneapolis Park Watch, The Water Works Park project will transform an inaccessible hill between West River Parkway and First Street S. — where Fuji-Ya has sat vacant since 1991 — into a park whose centerpiece will be the ruins of a former grain mill and the gate house of the original Minneapolis city water works.

It’s just one part of a long-term overhaul to the Central Riverfront Regional Park that runs along the riverbanks from the 35W bridge upstream to Plymouth Av., and includes or abuts the St. Anthony Main, Guthrie Theater and Mill City Museum areas where numerous apartments and condos have sprung up.

“Now that we have all these new residents down there, people are loving the park to death,” said Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board president Liz Wielinski. “We need to give it a face lift.”

Finance & Commerce reports that as the city of Minneapolis looks to redevelop a block sandwiched between the $420 million Downtown East mixed-use development and the new Minnesota Vikings stadium, market watchers and brokers alike say the site may be best suited for use as a hotel.

Minneapolis is seeking proposals to develop the air space above a parking ramp on the site within the Downtown Eastredevelopment as well as a street-level parcel attached to the ramp.

The block — sometimes referred to as the McClellan block — is at the northwest corner of Chicago Avenue and Fourth Street South, kitty corner from the Vikings stadium and a block east of two office towers planned by Minneapolis-based Ryan Cos. US Inc.

The McClellan block is made up of six parcels totaling 2.46 acres and valued at… Read More >>
